The international Energy Agency (IEA), a multi-government think-tank has set out a vision for a 50% cut in carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, compared with 2005 levels. To achieve this reduction, it calculates that about 55 fossil-fuelled power plants with carbon capture and storage technology, 32 nuclear plants and 17,500 large wind turbines would need to be built across the world each year until 2050. One of the key challenges listed by the IEA in achieving its vision of a low-carbon future is “boosting numbers of engineering and technical graduates”
